Stagville Summer Schedule 

July 29-August 2, 2008

9:30am-2:30pm

Tuesday-Saturday

 

Tuesday: Orientation and Agriculture Day

-Introduction to Stagville, largest antebellum plantation in NC

-Learn about plantations and compare to farms and communities

-Learn about crops that were grown here-tobacco and corn-activities with these crops

-Learn about the kitchen garden, practical uses for herbs and spices

-Make weathervanes and sundials

 

Wednesday: Animal Day

-Introduced to what animals would have been at Historic Stagville

-Field trip to actual farm to see farm animals

-Milk cows, feed goats

-Make our own ice cream, butter, and butter stamps to decorate butter as in the days of yore

 

 

 

Thursday: People and Education Day

-Learn about the people living here at Stagville: plantation owners, overseers, drivers, and enslaved people

-Compare and contrast houses lived in by both the freed and the enslaved at Stagville

-Compare and contrast school today to schooling Bennehan and Cameron children received, as well as education of the enslaved

-Field trip to the < xml="true" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" prefix="st1" namespace="">Burwell School in Hillsborough

 

Friday: Job Day

-Learn that plantations were self-sufficient communities-talk about all jobs found on the plantation

-Put specific jobs with faces here at Stagville

-We will try our hands at typical jobs on the plantation i.e.: basket making, weaving on a loom, making candles, and working outside in the garden in period costume

-Field trip to Duke Homestead

 

Saturday: Fun Day

-What did people do for fun back then anyway? We will play period games and learn popular period dances that the Bennehan and Cameron families would have been doing.

-We will also focus on leisure time in the enslaved community. We will emphasize oral histories and African stories, learn about the importance of music throughout the enslaved community, and make cowrie shell necklaces
